Ok, I guess it’s time to spill the beans. Last month I bought a piece of dirt, about a mile from my parents, who as many of you know live just north of Puerto Vallarta. Today, that piece of dirt has officially begun its transformation into Casa Buenavista, my new home.
It’s really happening. I’m moving to Mexico. With 2 dogs, a geriatric cat, and a trailerful of stuff. Lurko has agreed to join me on this adventure, which I am happy about. It does add a whole other dimension of interesting, since we’re leaping from “5 years of long-distance relationship” straight into “immigration to a foreign country and building a house together.” But we’ve been planning and talking about doing this for the last year. Don’t get me wrong, parts of this are terrifying, but it was still pretty amazing to get this photo from my mom today. It’s starting to feel real!
I chose the land for its view, and it is pretty amazing. It’s near my parents, and it’s also on the road to Monkey Mountain, a popular hiking trail that I am looking forward to exploring with the dogs. The price was good for the area. But right now it is just a square of dirt on the side of a hill. No water, no utilities, no power, nada. We’ll have to figure all that out. And Internet, since I’ll be working 100% online. But we have some ideas for making this work, and we will post about our progress.
Lurko helped me design a house, and the same people who built my parents’ house will be building mine. Well 20 years ago it was just the dad, now it’s the father and son. They are doing Step One now, which is digging the cistern and the septic tank. So it’s really happening and we are fastening our seatbelts for what I’m sure will be an interesting ride.
Next month I will be able to apply for my temporary visa, so however long it takes to get that will dictate when we can move our stuff down there. I’m telling folks August/ September but I actually have no idea. But the critters and I are safe in our Home-Away-From-Home, and the plan is to work and enjoy the time we have left in Texas before we leave. I’m guessing we will probably do a joint birthday/ farewell party in Austin in July, and maybe I can figure out something fun for my DFW/Denton family as well.
